About Zakynthos Marine Park (Loggerhead Turtle Protection Area)

Zakynthos Marine Park, officially known as the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, is one of the most important protected areas in the Mediterranean, established in 1999 to safeguard the endangered loggerhead sea turtle population which utilizes the island's sandy beaches for nesting. The park encompasses key nesting beaches such as Laganas Bay on the south coast, as well as critical marine habitats surrounding the island. Covering a diverse range of coastal and marine ecosystems, this protected area supports nesting sea turtles, significant populations of Mediterranean monk seals, and various species of dolphins and seabirds. Visitors to Zakynthos Marine Park can enjoy a blend of outdoor activities including guided turtle-watching tours, snorkeling in crystal-clear turquoise waters, boat excursions to the famous Blue Caves, and hiking along coastal paths offering views of the nesting beaches and cliffs. The park is a stronghold for environmental education and wildlife protection efforts, regulated by strict guidelines to minimize human impact during the crucial nesting season, which runs from May to August. Notable landmarks within the park are the extensive sandy beaches, such as Gerakas and Marathonisi—also known as Turtle Island—a small island where female loggerhead turtles come ashore to nest. The park offers visitors a unique opportunity to witness nature conservation in action, with local guides and research teams promoting sustainable tourism that balances public enjoyment with the protection of vital marine biodiversity.
